Year and place: 1965, Linköping
In the automobile history there are some 'mistaken' cars. Facett is one of them, but yet not.
In 1956 Saab presented Saab Sonett Super Sport at a car show in Stockholm. The company ASJ got the order to build 5 more prototypes. The project didn't lead to production.
(See ASJ and Saab for more info and photos.)
When Saab in 1963 started a new sports car project, ASJ sold some of the prototypes. (The new project, named Catherina, also involved ASJ.)
Number 4
One was sold to Sigvard Sörensson, an employee at ASJs construction department. It was prototype number 4, with an open green plastic body. But, he thought it was rather unpractical. So, he rebuilt it.
His car was presented in 1965. Guess what happened? Yes, it was by some thought of as a new Saab prototype. It made some news in Europe.
The Facett
Sörensson had rebuilt the chassis, and placed the gas tank between the rear wheels. He also switched the Sonett engine to a Saab Sport 52hp engine.
The body was replaced by a sleek metal coupé body with an unusual low front end. So low that there were no suitable place for headlamps. These were instead mounted on foldable stands inside the hood - when the headlamps should be used, the driver opened the hood, folded the headlamps outside, and closed the hood again.
He kept the car for some years. Later it was involved in a car accident, was repaired, and used by an owner in Bodafors for another 300.000 kilometres. In the summer of 1996 it was sold to a person living in northern Germany.
