G34 / Ginetta - Cars made in Sweden, info from Konditori 100

Year and place: 1995-, various

The British Ginetta G2 was presented in 1957, a chassis with a plastic 2-seated body that was sold as a kit car to be completed with Ford parts.

In 1959 G3 was presented, and G4 in 1961. The company built both open cars and coupés, in the 70s and 80s also complete cars were sold.

This G33, powered by a Cosworth Turbo, is one of 5 built in 1991. Born in Britain, and registred in Sweden when I saw it in summer 2000.

In 1992 financial problems put a stop to the production, and G33 was the last model built by the british company.

It was a long way to ...
Ingemar Engström, who among others imported Ginetta to Sweden, was one of the Ginetta-related persons who started the company Ginetta Ltd. They bought the trademark and tools, in order to continue production of the car. But the planned production of complete G33 cars couldn't be started. However, the race version of G27 was produced in Britain, both as kit cars and complete cars.

In 1993 they made a new attempt, together with the new swedish company UCAR (Uddevalla Construction Assembly Results). UCAR had also plans to build an american sports car and the swedish hybrid car Solon. But, no production.

Ingemar Engström and Stefan Sjönvall then formed the company Gin1Car AB (the digit 1 is in letters written 'ett' or 'etta', so the company name could be pronounced Ginetta...). They bought the tools et cetera for the G33, which was developed to G34. Jösse Car AB in Arvika (who built JC Indigo) built a prototype finished in early 1995. Five 'real' G34's were also built.

G34 number 1, registered as a 1995 Ginetta.

The model was by some seen as the best Ginetta so far. But, where should the cars be built?

In Älvdalen in the province Dalarna. The factory was rebuilt, and ready for production in early 1997. In year 2000 full production capacity should be reached, of 120 cars per year.

The G34
The steel tube frame was of their own construction, as the open 2-seater plastic body and several other parts. The driveline, including the 4-cylinder 165hp Volvo engine used in Volvo 940, and brakes came from Volvo.

With a weight of just 925 kilograms the G34 can do 223 km/h. It gets to 100 km/h in 5,9 seconds, and to 200 km/h in 13 seconds. A tune-up set is sold, which results in 204hp and a top speed of 251 km/h. And 4,9 to 100.

G34

Also a race version was on the program, G34r ('r' stands for 'roadsport'), built for swedish clubracing regulations.

In 1997 a hardtop model was presented.

Unfortunately, in 1999 production came to an end.

Ginetta in Britain?
According to one source Ginetta was still produced in Britain while the Swedish G34 car make had its history. Another place I learnt that Ginetta had restarted in Britain during the early 2000s. Some day I may be able to tell you the one and only story about Ginetta and G34...
