In 1963 Volvos company Bolinder-Munktell (BM) presented a prototype to an all wheel drive forestry vehicle, and the planned series got the name Lisa. The articulated vehicle was built in two lengths, for various tasks. To make it short, the engine sat on one side. 1966-68 almost 300 vehicles were made for forestry and military use. One prototype was made and tested in farming, but the results didn't lead to production.

The longer version, SM871, was base for the military version. It can load 1,4 metric ton. The 50 military Lisa were in use until 1997.
